Thou Shalt Not Lie: Mormon Church Refuses Petition!

10/30 Update: Nearly 17,000 people signed the letter demanding the Mormon church stop funding proposition 8. The Courage Campaign went to deliver our signatures on Tuesday but were rejected by the Los Angeles Mormon Church as seen by the video below. The campaign is now headed to Salt Lake City, Utah to deliver the signatures to the Mormon Church headquarters.

10/27: It's time for Californians to fight back against the dishonest attacks of the "Yes on 8" campaign funded by the Mormon Church. On Tuesday, the Courage Campaign will deliver a letter to President-Prophet Thomas Monson at the Los Angeles Mormon Temple, demanding that his church stop funding the blatant lies of the "Yes on 8" campaign.

We need to stop the Mormon Church from pushing their marriage views on Californians through the ballot box. Please sign this letter now to President-Prophet Thomas Monson demanding that his church cease funding the "Yes on 8" campaign:

Another lie. If you want people to take you seriously, why not stop lying.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is NOT funding the Yes on 8 campaign. They have merely identified the proposition as an important one in the preservation of traditional marriage and have encouraged members to do all they can to preserve traditional marriage.

Individual members have taken it upon themselves to stand up and be counted. They have committed their own money in order to protect traditional marriage, in much the same ways gays have spent their own money seeking to alter the definition of marriage.

Now that you know the facts, it's my hope that you will not continue spreading lies.

Anonymous - The mormon church is tax-exempt and should butt out of politics and stop trying to alter the constitution. Biblical marriage is a man and many wives. The definition always changes, and today fair minded people support marriage equality for all couples.

Anonymous is either lying or doesn't get it, when he/she says that the church is not funding the campaign! While it's true that there is no evidence, yet, that the church is directly pouring money into the Yes 8 campaign, they are leaning heavily on members to donate, often beyond their means.

And whether is "legal" or not, the fact remains that the church supports bigotry and discrimination!

I happened upon this site while searching for how the intersexed community is dealing with the Prop8 in CA. I am a Mormon and have in the past worked with the intersexed community and have even written articles dissuading parents from rash sex assignment surgeries for their intersexed children. I understand the challenge in legislating marriage based on gender. How in the world CA is going to fairly determine gender is beyond me.

As far as I know the Church has not used Church funds to support any proposition. It is true that we have been extremely organized and urged fervently to donate generously and to be active in getting out the Yes on 8 vote.

I just thought I'd drop a line to y'all to let you know that this is a struggle for some Church members. Most members want to protect traditional marriage, not take away rights of others. Most have little or no experience in any sort of GLBTI community. But most have love in their hearts. I do.

Please understand our struggle as we strive to understand yours.
