Exxon-Mobil Continues to Fuel Discrimination Against LGBT People

ExxonMobil continues to stand steadfast against including LGBT people in their non discrimination policy. Mobil had such a policy which was reversed when Exxon Corp merged with them. The shareholders refuse to acknowledge LGBT people and have consistently voted down a proposal for an inclusive non-discrimination policy.

This year shareholder support for adding LGBT protections to the non-discrimination policy went down by a whopping 18 percent. In total 78% of Exxonmobil shareholders are opposed to adding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression to their policy.

It is imperative that we continue to let them know of our concern as well as to ensure a community wide boycott.

Here is what I sent them:

I am greatly dissapointed that your shareholders have voted not to add sexual orientation/gender identity to the non-discrimination practices of your company. In addition you are the only Fortune 500 company not to provide domestic partnership benefits to same-sex coupled employees. I will boycott and encourage everyone to boycott Exxon-Mobile until you have fair labor practices towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) workers.

Thanks for posting this...there are many places to buy gas, and I wont include Exxon/Mobil until they include me.

Agree with thehostess' comment. Why should we support a company exercising discrimination? There are many other companies to buy gas from.

I had no idea. Thanks for sharing this. I'll definitely drive past the Exxon stations from now on. I'm firing off an email now.

Thanks everyone. They also suck because of their environmental destruction so while obviously any gas station pretty much sucks Exxon-Mobile is one of the worst abusers.

OH Hell Yeah, they won't get another red cent or dime from me, this is getting ready to hit my personal emailing - most of the folks i know spend over $150 wk on gas.

I think we need to continue to mount pressure on the company, I would urge community wide action on this. It is wrong and unfair of them to have reversed the policy and unethical to vote it down.

I have known about Exxon's practices for at least five years and vowed not to support them. It truly is a shame that in this day and age, a company that size has not come into the modern ages...especially with their profits.

I let them know I won't buy their products until they change their policies.

I used to work for BP and was the national chairperson for their LGBT employee resource group. I was also instrumental in expanding group membership globally. We were instrumental in getting BP to endorse ENDA, add gender identity to non-discrim policy and sponsor HRC at the national level. BP supported our group and our involvement in community activities like local pride parades. Shell's policies are very similar. So those are two other choices for you!

Exactly which gas stations does this mean we should boycott? I usually buy at CostCo, but I have a Shell station by my house too.

Queers United said...

Anonymous I believe either of those should be fine as they are not owned by exxonmobil to my knowledge.

Anonymous, BP often sells their unbranded gas to warehouse clubs like Costco. Shell may do the same. Again, both good choices.

I have been boycotting ExxonMobil since the merger, when Exxon execs forced the Mobil side to drop all gay-friendly regulations.

I have been boycotting this company for many years.

We've got to get the word out that there is still a boycott going on and why. What about persons traveling for business purposes? Companies should be encouraged to discourage travelers from purchasing Exxon-Mobil gasoline. I plan to write to my HR department to let them know about the shareholder's recent vote.

That would be great if companies could boycott it would have a larger impact. I hope your efforts are successful.
